Eugene Smarrelli joined BG Private in 1985, became a Partner in 1989, and was appointed Managing Partner in 2023. He is also chair of both the Advisory Board and the Board of Directors.

As Managing Partner, Eugene Smarrelli leads strategy and is responsible for the firm’s growth. This includes overseeing process improvements, finance, IT, staffing, and marketing, as well as looking for opportunities to expand our service offering.

BG Private is consistently listed as an AFR Top 100 Accounting Firm nationally (we are currently at number 42), and Eugene continuously encourages staff at all levels to work together to make the firm bigger and better. His consultative approach and ability to convene people ensures everyone understands the firm’s direction and their role in our success.

He is also the custodian of our purpose statement, our culture, and the high ethical values on which BG Private prides itself.

Eugene is one of the main architects of the firm’s Pathway to Partnership program, ensuring that staff have clarity around their personal career journeys. Having started at the firm as an Intermediate Accountant himself, he knows the importance that mentorship and inspiration play in professional development. To that end, Eugene is passionate about working with BG Private’s up-and-coming advisors, and advocating for them as they move up the ranks.

Above all, Eugene prides himself on prioritising clients, driving our efforts to maximise client satisfaction.

Since joining the company he has built a significant and loyal client base, retaining some of them since the very beginning. As an illustration of his long-term partnership with clients, he has helped some of them progress from an employee role through to running their own multi-million-dollar businesses.

His clients benefit from Eugene’s “on the job” specialist advice and his expertise in consulting, taxation, and financial management. His wealth of knowledge is exemplified by his appointment to a variety of boards, including some as chairman.

Eugene is a music buff and a philanthropist. He successfully combines these passions with his managerial experience to help numerous charitable and not-for-profit organisations. As an example, he recently helped raise more than $300,000 to construct a new wing of the Cabrini Hospital.

In his spare time, Eugene loves playing and collecting guitars. He is also a passionate Richmond Tigers supporter.
